Directed by multi-award winning veteran Polish director Andrzej Wajda, Katyn investigates the murder of thousands of Polish officers by the Soviet Secret Police during World War II. Among those killed was Wajda's own father.

The disappearance of over 15,000 officers in 1940 was a mystery at first and news of the tragedy was not revealed until the spring of 1943, after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union uncovered the mass graves in Russia's Katyn Forest. During the USSR's post-war occupation of Poland, Soviet propagandists blamed the deaths on the Nazis and set out to punish anyone speaking the truth. After fifty years of cold war secrecy, the Kremlin officially confessed in 1990 that Stalin and the KGB were responsible for the crime. Katyn uses stories from authentic diaries and letters to tell the fate of four officers and their families, and one woman's courageous determination to uncover the truth.

Based on the true story, SOBIBOR tells the story of the heroism of Soviet officer Alexander Pechersky. Sobibor was one of four concentration camps in Poland. Prisoners were not separated into two groups like many of the other camps: fit or unfit for work. Those who arrived in Sobibor were doomed for death. With the greatest odds against him, our hero managed to do the impossible — in only three weeks he organized a daring revolt, which aided the mass escape of Sobibor’s condemned prisoners. Some of the escapees were caught and shot, but the rest followed Pechersky and managed to escape. They joined the resistance to fight the Nazis. Pechersky’s victory was such an embarrassment, the camp was dismantled at Himmler’s order & Alexander considered one of the Great Russian heroes of WW2.

Organized by Martin Scorsese's non-profit organization The Film Foundation, this essential selection—curated by Scorsese himself—features films from some of Poland's most accomplished and lauded filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957--1987. Locked down in his apartment, Pawel Lozinski, one of Poland's most acclaimed filmmakers, hatched an experiment: focusing his camera on the eight square metres of sidewalk beneath his balcony, he waited for stories to come to him instead of searching them out. And come, they did. For two and a half years, he accosted strangers with questions, asking random passersby and neighbourhood residents alike "Who are you?" and proposing intrusive and sometimes unwelcome conversations. Some hurried by on phones and a few made polite-ish comments, but others shared swaths of unexpected experiences. The fixed camera became a confessional of sorts, recording a vibrant stream of life, full of small dramas and comedies, poverty, secrets, a mystery, loneliness—all moments revealing the unseen riches of everyday living. By turns sweet, sad and even shocking, Balcony Movie renders an intimacy between strangers only a pandemic could inspire.

Synopsis:
Franek and Jozek Kalina, sons of a poor farmer, are brothers from a small village in central Poland. Franek immigrated to the United States in the 80's, and cut all ties with his family. Only when Jozek's wife arrives in the US, without explanation, does Franek finally return to his homeland.

Franek discovers that Jozek has been ostracized from the community, and constantly receives various threats. As Franek and Jozek struggle to rebuild their relationship, they are drawn into a gothic tale of intrigue. The two brothers eventually uncover a dark secret that forces them to confront the history of their family and their hometown.

Upon its release in Poland, Aftermath received acclaim and also generated intense controversy. Polish nationals have accused the film of being anti-Polish propaganda, as well as a distortion of a sensitive piece of Polish history. The film has been banned in some Polish cinemas, and actor Maciej Stuhr (Jozek) has received death threats.
