Omar (Gordon Warnecke) hires his school friend (Daniel Day-Lewis), a former Fascist and current lover, to do the graft in converting his laundrette into a veritable palace. This is an unacceptable role reversal for Johnny's former bullyboy friends who are unable to understand his change of heart.

Directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity, The Queen), written by Hanif Kureishi (Venus, Le Week-End), and also starring Saeed Jaffrey, Roshan Seth, Rita Wolf and Shirley Anne Field.
