Backbeat | D Bernard Shakey | USA, 1982
Neil Young's rare, bizarre 1982 apocalyptic comedy finally hits Australian screens.
Young is revered for his righteous protest songs, but lost curio Human Highway proves that he can have fun – very strange fun.
Under a directorial pseudonym Bernard Shakey, Young drew together an all-star counter-cultural cast to tell the tale of dorky garage mechanic Lionel Switch (Shakey himself) navigating the last day on earth with a rock star, an Arab sheik, nuclear-waste technicians and assorted freaks in the dead town of Linear Valley.
Dean Stockwell, Dennis Hopper, Sally Kirkland, Russ Tamblyn, Charlotte Stewart and the members of Devo turned an almost non-existent script and behind-the-scenes drug shenanigans into a surreal slice of unforgettable oddness.
Recut and re-released over the decades, with sealed copies commanding huge prices on the collector circuit, this is a rare opportunity to witness the madness – as Shakey intended it – on the big screen.
