Shanghai Surprise (1986) - Original Trailer
In their only appearance together in a feature film, then-newlyweds Sean Penn and Madonna team up for Jim Goddard’s bold adaptation of Tony Kenrick’s 1978 novel, Faraday’s Flowers.
In 1937 Shanghai, Penn plays a struggling tie salesman-come fortune hunter looking for a way to escape China. When he meets a missionary nurse (Madonna) bent on finding effective opium treatments for her patients, they form an unlikely partnership to find a hidden stash of the drugs known as ‘Farraday’s Flowers’.
But a series of mishaps threaten to throw the couple off course, as every thug and drug smuggler in Shanghai is out to stop them and take the opium for themselves. And when the couple begin falling for each other, the choice between romance and successfully finding the opium becomes much trickier than they first thought.
