Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel sees a family going to live and work at a remote, empty, out-of-season hotel so that Jack, an author and recovering alcoholic, can write. But the place has a murky past, and while son Danny starts seeing strange things, Wendy finds her husband turning into a barely recognisable monster... Kubrick eschews horror conventions to chilling and claustrophobic effect.
